This paper proposes a discontinuous region controlled PWM technique to mitigate overvoltage in motor drive systems. The reflected voltage phenomenon is analyzed by applying the transmission line theory to motor drive systems with long transmission lines. The discontinuous region is set equal to the size of the overvoltage region in 60° DPWM. The magnitude of the reference voltage is adjusted to mitigate overvoltage when the overvoltage region exceeds 60°. This paper also presents a comparative analysis of the discontinuous regions required for overvoltage mitigation based on the modulation index (MI), using the proposed method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through simulation and experimental results.
