This paper proposes a discontinuous pulse width modulation (DPWM) method for single inverter dual parallel (SIDP) permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives to minimize the power loss of the inverter. The proposed method maximizes the reduction of power losses in the SIDP PMSM by applying a DPWM method based on the current phase. Since the resultant current of the two motors flows through the inverter in the SIDP PMSM, the clamping interval should be determined using the phase angle of the resultant current. The phase angle of the resultant current is mathematically derived by considering the current relationship between the two motors and the coordinate system relationship. The effectiveness of the proposed method in the SIDP PMSM system is verified through simulation and experimental results.
