This paper proposes a minimum loss discontinuous pulse width modulation (MLDPWM) strategy in a single inverter dual parallel (SIDP) interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive system. An operating principle of a SIDP motor drive system is described, and a DPWM scheme based on a phase angle of resultant current of two motors is applied. Applicability limits of current-phase-based DPWM are analyzed by considering voltage-current phase deviation caused by load imbalance between two motors. To mitigate this issue, a switching criterion for transition from current-phase-based DPWM to voltage-phase-based DPWM is established based on detected phase difference. Inverter losses for each modulation scheme are comparatively analyzed, and validity of the proposed strategy is verified through PSIM simulations.
