This paper proposes an improved five-level space vector modulation (SVM) method to suppress circulating current and leakage current simultaneously. A parallel operation of threelevel inverters has recently been used to increase the power rating in many applications, including photovoltaic (PV), wind power, and medium voltage motor drive systems. An interleaved pulse width modulation (PWM) of the parallel inverters is used to improve the output current quality. However, the carrier phase difference due to the interleaved PWM generates a significant circulating current, which causes current
distortion and power losses. To solve this problem of the interleaved PWM, the existing proposed method is a five-level SVM method. This
modulation method guarantees a better output current quality and a lower circulating current than the interleaved PWM. This method has a trade-off
that the leakage current increases due to the high frequency of the common-mode voltage (CMV). The leakage current is an important consideration
in PV and motor drive systems because of many safety issues and degradation of the output current quality. This paper proposes an improved
modulation method to suppress the leakage current and the circulating current and improve the quality of the output current. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by the simulation results.
