This paper proposes reduction method of a common mode voltage (CMV) in an open-end winding interior permanent magnet synchronous motor
(OEW-IPMSM) fed by a dual inverter with single source. The CMV is generated at each of the inverter terminals due to switching of inverter phase legs in dual inverter with single source. The CMV creates shaft voltage through the motor in parasitic capacitance. These results in bearing current which
can reduce motor reliability and its lifetime. In order to avoid these disadvantages, it is possible to make synthesized voltage vector using a switching
combination in which CMV is not generated. However, the maximum dc-link voltage utilization of the dual inverter is decreased due to the reduction
of modulation index (MI). This paper proposes reduction method of CMV based on modified pulse width modulation (PWM). The proposed method
relocates vector of the dual inverter in a modulation period. As a result, the CMV is suppressed and the maximum MI is improved. The validity of the
proposed reduction method of common mode voltage in OEW-IPMSM is demonstrated by the simulation results.
