This paper proposes efficient operation of a dual inverter to drive an open-end winding interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-IPMSM). Using higher voltage of stator winding of the OEW-IPMSM at lower speed or lower load conditions, the current quality is low and higher switching
losses is occurred. Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the voltage of stator windings according to the variable speed and load characteristics. This paper proposes an efficient operation strategy by operating from a single inverter to the dual inverter considering the speed and load characteristics. In low
speed and load torque operation region, the dual inverter operates as a single inverter using only zero voltage vector of inverter 2. By using only one voltage source, the OEW IPMSM can be driven under high voltage modulation index (MI) conditions. When an increase in speed or large load torque
is required, the stator winding requires a higher voltage than the single voltage source. In this case, the dual inverter operates using effective voltage
vector of inverter 2 for boosting the voltage of the stator winding. The validity of the proposed efficient operation of a dual inverter to drive
OEW-IPMSM is demonstrated by the simulation results.
