This paper proposes improving the input current quality and dynamic response of a diode rectifier-fed interior permanent magnet
synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive system using small DC-link capacitors. The small DC-link capacitor system, which is using a small
film capacitor, has several advantages such as high efficiency, high reliability, and compact size. The input current of the system,
however, is distorted by harmonics, which is appeared at a resonance frequency. In order to mitigate this problem, a DC-link shunt
compensator (DSC) is applied which injecting compensation current. A direct power control (DPC) is applied to improve the dynamic
response of the IPMSM drive. The DPC selects proper voltage vectors considering active and reactive power of the IPMSM. High
power factor can be achieved by controlling the reactive power as zero. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation
results.
