This paper analyzed the overvoltage in motor drive systems with different transmission line lengths. The variation in voltage on the motor side was characterized based on the propagation time determined by the transmission line length. The line-to-line overvoltage was determined according to the magnitude of the reference voltage. Based on the analysis, an overvoltage exceeding the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) standards was defined. Voltage variations were analyzed to generalize the regions in which overvoltage occurred. Various simulations and experimental results verified the analysis of the transmission line length and the generalization of the overvoltage occurrence regions.
